Summer Recap

Friday 28 August 2009 by legendary_totoro

Well, summer’s not really over, especially for those Frenchies who go back to school around mid-September. Here in Tahiti, it’s not even summer but winter also known as "austral summer"... Anyway, this is just a recap of what happened in the few pas months

Living to eat or Eating to live ?

Aside from my culinary trip (and the extra weight it gave me), it was also the occasion to spend some time with people I love so much : my volleyball community of friends. Each time we saw, it was another occasion to play together again and it was awesome. I more and more feel the passing of time but whenever we play, it feels like I’m 18y old again !!

Volleyball has always been my primary sport and it’s like I’m rejuvenating when I play with my friends...

It was definitely heartbreaking to leave them... I love you guys and it’s never really TRUE volleyball when I don’t play with you... (Can I pull something more teary for a love declaration ?)

Sorry for the lack of space talking about you guys, but we all know how big the place you have in my heart really is, right ^_^ ?

Back to Work aka School

I’m once again a Substitute Teacher but I now have high-school classes along with my previous middle-school ones. Those high-schoolers have made me nervous because I’ve never had them before. So I have tons of work to do and a whole lot of things to think about.

There’s a lot of commotion because the program of the first years have changed. There’s a reinforced integration of probabilities and statistics which isn’t really surprising since they’ve introduced these in the last year of middle school. And there’s also a theme named Algorithms which I’m very familiar with since my computer science background. Problem is, we are not to make a separate Algorithms chapter but rather we are told to use it in very other chapter as examples.

It’s kinda difficult when you still haven’t prepared your other chapters like me but it’s also challenging to put in use my computer science skills. I’ll gladly help the other teachers as soon as I have something ready myself.

We are also supposed to give the 1st years some written test to evaluate their level at the beginning of high school. This adds up with our regular weekly saturday test. In the end the next 2 weeks are gonna be hell with all the corrections I’ll have to work on...

Anyway, the classes are as lively as ever and that’s what I love about the job. Good thing !

Sports

Volleyball

I’ve been recontacted by Piare Volley Club in order to have another year with them. I’m really balancing out the pros & cons as I haven’t made a definitive decision yet. I so wanted to quit after last year but I’m just really unable to stay true to my words... I just love the game and it’s been a big part of my life for the last 15 years...

As a matter of fact, I was playing less and less at the end of the previous season, for no apparent reason. I haven’t talked the coach about it so I don’t know for sure. Anyways, I felt I was as good a choice as the other setter but in the end, I just filled in as a substitute. Moreover, when the selection started for the Mini Oceania Games in New Caledonia this July, I wasn’t included which just goes along with the rest.

I’m not ranting for not being selected ! They have selected a lot of youngsters (younger than 20) and it was even criticized in the media. The assembled team still managed to fetch the gold medal so there are no place for arguing here. It just seems like 27y old is too old for the selection, regardless of one’s value as a player.

Anyway, I don’t have much goals left here if I can’t make it in the selection. I’ve already proven my valor here for the past two years, especially considering the fact I’m not playing at my preferred position...

So for the moment, I don’t picture myself doing every training session and every match. I’m just going there to sweat a little bit and try to lose the weight I’ve recently gained.

Tennis

If I’m ever stopping volleyball, it will be for tennis. I’ve been playing for something like 4 years but didn’t take any individual lessons. Basically I’m just a rookie but people say I have some potential thanks to my height, my experience in competition, and my being left handed.

I’m used to playing at an uncle’s place with other elders. I’m playing doubles so it’s really slow and the difference between our physical conditions makes it easier for me than for them ^_^. The games are soft but the smile is always on and I love that relaxed ambiance.

I might try to give in more efforts by scheduling more regular sessions but so far I don’t play that often (once a week at best). I’m still in that crucial moment in every sport when you have to learn the moves and it doesn’t come out right out the hat. You need a huge amount of practice and repeating before you can get it right, which is definitely not what I’m doing...

I’m regular enough with what I do, but it doesn’t mean I’m doing it well. Without some guidance, I know I won’t be able to progress. But I’m not too worried as it sounds like it may spoil the fun.

That’s All Folks

Well, looks like everything that happened was covered here so take care until next time !!
